Subject:

Joint Management Review of TMI-2 Cleanup Activities

Dear Secretary Jones and Dr. Snyder:

In his letter of >brch 4, 1980 to the U.S. NRC Chairman Ahearne, Mr. Dieckamp suggested it "would be appropriate and helpful to provide for regular joint manage-ment review of TMI cleanup activities important to public safety.

Since our indi-vidual responsibilities cannot be fulfilled withmit substantial interaction between our respective organizations, I think we can boch direct our activities more ef fectively if a senior representative of NRC management and a senior member of GPU management meet periodically and review and evaluate the status of cleanup activities."

Mr. Dieckamp went on to suggest "that a representative from the Cocmonwealth of Pennsylvania may wish to participate in such.acetings in order to facilitate their review of site activities."

Confirming the arrangements made by telephone, what we hope will be the first of such meetings is scheduled for October 10, 1980 at 10:30 A.M. at the offices of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources in the Fulton Building.

In fulfillment of my commitment to suggest agenda topics, I propose the following:

(1) presentation by GPU of the scope of work plannad for the next 15 months, (2) presentation by GPU on the status of plans for treating the highly contaminated water, (3) presentation by GPU on plans for interim storage and disposal of solid radioactive waste, (4) discussion of safety concerns associated with major delays in accomplish-ing cleanup.
