Docket No. 70-1308 11EMORANDUM FOR:

Leland C. Rouse, Chief l

Advanced Fuel and Spent Fuel Licensing Branch I

FROM:

A. Thomas Clark, Jr Advanced Fuel and Spent Fuel Licensing Branch

SUBJECT:

SITE VISIT T0 f10RRIS OPERATION ON JULY 31,1980 The subject site visit was made to visually observe changes at the site since the writer's last visit in 1974.

The writer was accompanied by Mr. Charles C. Peck, NRC Region III Inspector. The General Electric personnel participating in the site visit were:

T. E. Engels, R. Fine, H. R. Strickler, K. J. Eger, and J. D. Kesman.

Since my last visit the cask receiving area has been enclosed. A new cask service facility has been constructed.

Two additional railway spurs have been installed. The fluorine building equipment has been removed. A new canister and support system has been installed, Addi-tional cask receipt equipment has been provided.

The new pump room addition was under construction.

Inside the main building, in the former manipulator repair room, a new electrodecon-tamination operation is beina installed.

It is obvious from the visit that the personnel at the ' cris Operation have benefited.from their.

experience in recent years and introduced a number of improvements in fuel receipt and storage.

I was especially pleased that the good train-ing program in force during my last tenure has been continued, even though Part 55 requirements do not specifically apply.

I' discussed the chances of a fire at the site whicii could potentially result in a release of radioactivity.

Obviously, there is no threat of fire in the basins.

No combustibles are kept in the filter room, i

a location where there is some concentration and collection of radio-activity.
