Docket No. 50-382 IE Bulletin No. 80-09
-2 Hydramotor Actuator Deficiencies J'i i
REFERENCE:
LPL 14321 dated June 17, 1980
Dear Sir:
In the referenced letter we indicated that AH-90 and NH-90 series Hydramotor Actuators manufactured by ITT-General Controls will be used in safety-related systems and that the problems described in the subject bulletin were being investigated.
The investigation and evaluation included:
1.
A testing program by ITT-General Controls to determine new selection nomographs for actuators using the standard springs and for.ctuators using the low force No. 1 spring (with stroke limited to less then 3 inches).
j l
2.
Determination of applications where the low force No. 1 spring was used (actuato.s shipped before December, 1979) and verification
{
that the stroke length is less than 3 inches for these applications.
)
3.
Comparison of thrust required with the new selection nomographs.
4 Performance testing of specific actuators by equipment suppliers.
Corrective actions resulting from the investigation are:
1.
The springs were replaced in four valves (3AC-TM 163A,172B,188A, and 189B) prior to shipment.
2.
The springs will be adjusted on four dampers (D-1(SA) & (SB) and D-17(SA) & (SB)).
These dampers are on site and the adjust =ent will be made by July, 1981.

All other actuators were determined to be adequate for the specific application.
We intend to test these actuators during our initial testing program to demonstrate their functional adequacy under design conditions.
Yours very truly, D. L. Aswell i
