10 CFR 50.55(e) i FIRST INTERIM REPORT i

Description of Deficiency During a recent NRC inspection of the component cooling water heat exchangers at the Yellow Creek Nuclear Plant, it was reported that various welding deficiencies existed on the welds and base metal for the 24" stainless steel nossles and manhole to exchanger welds. The various deficiencies noted were are strikes, weld splatter, slag, overlap, lack of fusicn, undercut, and excessive weld metal. The component cooling water heat exchangers were manufactured by the Joseph Oat Cc pany and p.trehased by T7A frem Cc=bustica Engineering.

Corrective Action On March 19, 1981, a field inspectica was conducted of the component cooling water heat exchangers. The areas reported as having deficient welds otre inspected by embers of TVA, the Authorized Nuclear Inspector, and the repMsentatives of the Joseph Oat Co:pany and Cc bustion Engineering. The noted defects appear to be confined to the surface and will probably be re=cved by grinding. Jcseph Cat's representative stated that he would report his findings 'A his managenent with the rece=mendation that the areas in question be I repaired and inspected as necessary.
