Dear Mr. Goller:
Pursuant to Section IX. H.
- 2. b.
(2) of Appendix A to the Humboldt Bay Unit No. 3 Facility Operating License, we are hereby notifying you of a malfunction of fire pump No. 1 which is one of three plant fire pumps that supply water to the Unit 3 low pressure core flooding system. At 0910 hours on October 22, 1974, when the pump was operating to supply a normal fire system load, the motor windings short circuited due to insulation deterioration. At the time of the malfunction Unit No. 3 was in the power operation mode operating at 155 MWt, 48 MWe. Immediately following the malfunction the operability of the other two fire pumps and the Units two core spray pumps was verified by conducting the monthly operational tests. The loss of one fire pump does not render the low pressure core flooding system inoperable because only two of the three pumps are required for the system to meet design and accident analysis requirements. The motor was repaired, and the pump was inspected, run under test, and returned to service on October 25, 1974. The normal monthly operational testing of the fire pumps will be continued and is sufficient to detect malfunctions of this l 12000 P00R ORIGINAL F/O3020 N9
