Gentleren:

The above referenced letter (Peference 1) requested that the Licensee furnish inferration to the NEC regarding our plans to irplerent the requirerents of the final edition of NUPEG-0619, "PrF Feedwater Nozzle and Control Rod Drive Return Iine Nozzle Cracking".

The referenced NUPEG surrarized the causes of feedwater nozzle /

sparger and control rod drive hydraulic return line nozzle cracking problers, the testing analysis, ef fectiveness of crocosed solutions, and the staff's conclusions and plans for irplerentation.

The report I

addressed therral cycling fatigue initiated cracking in G.F.

BWP l

ressure vessels containing :ne or more feedwater and CPD return i

line nozzles.

Older plants et having the generic type nozzles of Technical Activity A-10 were not considered in NUPFG-0619 (Pefer-ence 2).

The La Crosse Poiling Water Peactor (LACEUP ) pressurc vessel does not contain feedwate_r and CRD return line nozzles cf the generic type addressed in the referenced NURFG-0619.

The LACBWR feedwater and CED 1.; urn lire piping i-connected to the forced circulation pump suction pipiag through branch-type connections - not reactor vessel nozzle connections of the type addressed in NUREG-0619.

LACBWP's branch connections also do not in orporate spargers. 810$sn t

Mr. Darrel G.

Eisenhut, Director LAC-7365 Division of Licensing February 9, 1981 Therefore, the specific stress-corrosion conditions that lead t_

inside surface cracking as reported to have occurred in other BWR designs does not exist at LACBWR.

Consequently, because of these significant differences in feedwater/CRD return line penetration designs, no modifications to existing LACBWR systers are planned.

Inspections if the inside surfaces of several reactor vessel nozzles utilizing UT procedures have been perforred in the past at IICEPP with no evidence of inside radius cracking

(" Inservice Exarinations for LACBWR", SwRI Project 17-5418, Final Reports of Noverber 1978 and June 1979).

To investigate further, we have discussed the cracking problems reported in the referenced NUPEG-0619 with our consultant, Southwest Pescarch Institute, and the possibility of applying UT techniques to deterrine the presence of or absence of cracking in the inner radius and bore of inaccessible piping penetrations.

Although LACEER dces not have generic type nozzles identified in Technical Activity A-10, it is our intention to investigate the feasibility of conductine additional inservice inspections of feed-water and centrol red drive branch connections.

An extension for subritting an answer to the letter request cf Reference (1) was granted by the NPC LACEFR Project Manager, Mr.

J.

Shea, of the Division of Peactor Operations.

No further acticns are planned at this tire.

If you have any rurther questiene regarding this subrittal, please contact us.

Very truly yours, DAIRYLAND PCWER C70PEPATIVE s
