Central Files RAB R/F TDMurphy DEC 2 41930 MEMORANDUM FOR: Donald E. Solberg, Chief Systems Perfomance Research Branch, SAFER FROM:

Thomas D. Murphy, Chief Radiological Assessment Branch, DSI

SUBJECT:

REVIEW 0F CORROSION PRODUCT GENERATION, RELEASE.

TRANSPORT AND DEPOSITIDN IN LWR'S In response to your memo cf December 2,1980 I read Stalhen's report.

Several things that may be of interest to you:

1.

DOE /ET34004-1, Management Study of Light Water Reactor Radiation Exposure September 1980, is a paper sponsored by DOE that parallels the EGG work.

I'd suggest that you contact Dan Giessing at DOE to assure that we are not unknowingly duplicating efforts in this area.

2.

The DOE study may come close to answering Weger's concerns (His memo to you of 12/4/80).

3.

The three most promising areas of reducing radiation fields around l

reactors in my opinion involves:

a) Strict water chemistry control of operating reactors.

l b) Development of high tempersture filtration systems for on line processing of reactor coolant, c) Development of a dilute decontamination scheme for the control of the buildup transport and deposition of activated corrosion products.
