December 5, 1980 Docket Nos.: 50-277 50-278 IE Bulletin 80-21 Mr. Boyce H.

Grier, Director Office of Inspection and Enforcement Region I U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission 631 Park Avanue King of Prussia, PA 19406

Dear Mr. Crier:

This letter is in response to Bulletin 80-21 forwarded to us on November 6, 1980 concerning the use of defective valve 3

yokes supplied by 'talcolm Foundry Company, Inc.

Approximately 120 manhours have been expended in conducting the review for Bulletin 80-21 and in preparing this response.

The " Action To Be Taken by Addressee" and our response are stated below.

Action To Be Taken by Addressee Determine if any of the active valves in use er planned for use in safety-related systems at your facility have valve parts cast by Malcolm Foundry Company, Inc.

If no valves are identified as having potentially faulty material, indicate that this is the case and ignore the remaining questions.

Responil e

The sixteen suppliers of safety-related valves in use at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station have been requested to determine whether or not their valves have parts cast by Malcolm Foundry Company, Inc.

Fifteen of the sixteen valve suppliers have verbally confirmed that none of their va"ves used at Peach Bottom contain Malcolm 8102050 % 5 g

Foundry parts; in fact, fourteen companies have nevec used this foundry.

The other vendor, General Electric, is performing a review to make this determination.

All respondents have been requested to provide the results of their reviews in writing.

It is important to note that Anchor-Darling Valve Company, the r

valve manufacturer identified in the bulletin as having used Malcolm Foundry, has confirmed that their valves supplied to Peach Bottom do not contain parts cast by Malcolm Foundry.

Since no valves have been identified at Peach Bottom that contain parts manufactured by Malcolm Foundry, Items 2 and 3 do not require a response.

A final response to this bulletin will be a

forwarded to you as soon as General Electric informs us of the results of their review.

If you have any questions or require additional informatinn, do not hesitate to contact us.

i Very truly yours, e
