JOSEPH ft. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT - UflITS 1 & 2 ALTERNATE SHUTDOWN CAPABILITY The purpose of this letter is to address the staff position presented in onclosure 1 to your letter of November 5,1980, concerning Farley Unit 2 alternate hot shutdown capability. This capability is one phase of alternate shutdown,Section III.G of 10CFR 50, Appendix R which becomes effective on February 19, 1981. Based on discussions with the NRC Staff, Alabama Power Company will implement in Farley Unit 2 any modifications required for Farley Unit 1 for the following three issues identified in Appendix R:

Fire Protection of Safe Shutdown Capability III.J. Emergency Lighting III.0. Oil Collection System for Reactor Coolant Pump Such modifications would be performed in accordance with the schedules for implementation specified in 10CFR 50.48(C)(5). Alabama Power Compcny will fully comply with provisions of the Farley Unit 2 fuel loading and low power testing license NPF-8 Section 2.C.(ll) and provisions of Section 9.0 of the Farley Unit 2 Safety Evaluation Report, Supplement No. 4, related to fire protection.
The results of the design evaluation which will be performed to meet Appendix R alternate shutdown requirements will be provided to the NRC Staff for review and concurrence. Sufficient time will be taken for the evaluation in order to provide a thorough analysis which will ensure that a minimum capability safe shutdown train is provided.
