This information is intended to be directed to each RTR Facility Director or Training Coordinator. If you are not the proper person for this information, please forward this email to the correct individual and email a reply back to me with the correct information.

Due to very recent NRC staff retirements and departures from the NRC, the Research and Test Reactor (RTR) Oversight Branch (PROB) now has a critical shortage of RTR operator licensing examiners. This shortage will have an effect on your requested Fiscal Year 2020

(FY 2020) operator license examinations.

Recently, each facility was solicited by the NRC to request NRC examinations for FY 2020.

My staff developed a very demanding schedule which included all requested examinations.

The schedule allowed for very little leeway for the usual schedule changes, postponements, and examination retakes. However, the schedule relied on a full complement of NRC licensed examiners, which we no longer have. We only have three qualified examiners for all 31 RTR facilities.

After reviewing the schedule with my staff this morning, we believe that we can currently support the FY 2020 schedule thru the end of October 2019. After that, with only 3 qualified examiners, delays and postponements may be necessary to support the schedule.

We are currently working multiple leads to find capable NRC staff who can promptly acquire the knowledge and skill sets to become RTR examiners. It is reasonable to expect that additional staff could alleviate the schedule complications as early as March to June 2020.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments about this information.

Thank you for your understanding and support.
