SUBJECT:
SUMftARY OF MEETING HELD ON OCTOBER 22, 1980 TO DISCUSS CONTROL ROOM DESIGN 1.
General Representatives of the NRC staff and its consultant and the applicant and its consultant met on October 22, 1980 to discuss the applicant's plans for resolving concerns developed from the Human Factors Engineering Branch review of the control room design. The meeting was held at the NRC staff offices in Bethesda, fiaryland. A list of those persons that attended the meeting is provided in the enclosure.

Purpose The purpose of the meeting was to review the applicant's proposal for resolving staff concerns arising from its review of the control room design.

Discussion l
The applicant described its program plan for responding to the staff concerns. The program plan consists of two phases. Phase 1 consists of the following tasks:
Task 1 - Control room evaluation planning Task 2 - Review of NRC findings Task 3 - Task analysis Task 4 - Control improvements Task 5 - Display improvements Task 6 - C/D arrangement improvements
'ask 7 - Labeling improvements ask 8 - Annunicator improvements Task 9 - Status / monitor light improvements Task 10 - Control room arrangements / environment improvements The applicant explained how each of the NRC staff concerns would be factored into one or more of these ten tasks. Phasa 1 of the program will be scheduled for completion by January 15, 1981.

. Phase 2 of the program will be scheduled to begin after issuance of an operating license and will consist of the following phases.
Task 11 - Full scale control room evaluation Task 12 - Technical Support Center concept review Task 13 - Computer console review Task 14 - Review of recommended backfit Task 15 - Reporting It was agreed that the staff would report the status of the review to date in the Safety Evaluation Report. The detailed review of the specific fixes will be reported in a supplement to the Safety Evaluation Report.
