Dear Mr.-Varga:
This is to inform you of the intent on the part of Common- alth Edison to make use of ASME Code Case N-275, " Repair of Welds,Section III, Division 1", approved May 15, 1980, to utilize
-alternate rules for examination of areas prepared for repair of welds. A copy .of the approved code case is attached.
This code case was reviewed and accepted without comment by an NRC representative to the ASME Council and we anticipate that the NRC Staff.will include it in the next revision of Regulatory Guide 1.84. Commonwealth Edison requests that the NRC Staff acknowledge acceptability of this Code Case for immediate use at Byron and Braidwood' Stations.
It is.our hope that this issue will be reviewed as soon as possible so that the Byron construction schedule is not adversely affected. Acceptance of this code case by early December will permit flushing of. certain relatively large lines. Should any questions exist, we request that a meeting be scheduled immediately.
