SUBJECT:

STAFF FINDINGS RELATED TO THE PROPOSED IMPORT OF 2000 KILOGRAMS OF URANIUM ENRICHED TO 3.8% FROM ITALY (ISNM080015)

General Electric Company submitted an application dated November 7,1980 for a license authorizing the import of 2000 kilograms of uranium in the fors of UO, and U 0, enriched to 3.8% U-235 from Italy. This material will be used 38 fop the Caorso reactor.>

Air transport in approved containers, GE Model BU-5 (USA /6458/AF) is anticipated, although ocean transport may be used, time pennitting.

The import of. low-enriched uranium in its various forms has been assured many times in the past. This proprMed import essentially is the same as previous requests, and represents no mateM41 change in circumstances from conditions and findings which existed at the time of the earlier imports, for example, ISNM78020, ISNM79019, and ISNM80007.

The staff finds that this import will not be inimical to the comon defense and security, or constitute an undue risk to the public health and safety or to the environment.
