Mr. John F. Ahearne, Chairman
~
U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H Street N.W.
Washington, D. C.
-20555
Dear Chairman Ahearne:
This is to urge that the Nucicar Regulatory Commission act as quickly as possible to approve the retarn to service of Three Mile Island Unit 1 which was undauaged in the March 28, 1979 accident at TMI Unit 2.
At the same time that TMI Unit 1 continues out of service, I understand that six or seven other B&W pressurized water reactor stations, almost identical in design to Unit 1, have been permitted to continue in service.
That being the case, it appears that Unit 1 has been singled out and to use an expression that is vogue today is being " discriminated against." Worse yet, it is the customers of the oper.ng companies that own I.I that cre being discriminated against.
And a result of that dis-crimination, vt course, is the higher price they must pay for electricity.
We are all aware of the concern about the safe operation of nuclear generating stations.
I think, however, that in the three or more years that TMI Unit 1 opersted prior to the accident, it was demonstrated that the unit operated exceptionally well and that Metropolitan Edison demonstrated its ability to operate it safely.
It is with these thoughts in mind, as well as concern over the financial future of the companies that own Three Mile Island, that I again urge your commission to act as expeditiously as possible to see to the return to service of TML Unit 1.
Sincerely, S
MMr_
