Subject:
Zion Station Units 1 and 2 Report on Testing of Bergen-Paterson Steam Generator Snubbers NRC Docket Nos. 50-295 and 50-304 Reference (a):
January 17, 1980, letter from James G.
Keppler to C. Reed
Dear Mr. Keppler:
As indicated in Reference (a), Commonwealth Edison Company committed to provide the NRC Region III staff the results of the testing of the 12-inch Bergen-Paterson snubbers during the May-June, 1980, Unit-2 refueling outage.
That report is enclosed as to this letter.
Based on this report, Commonwealth Edison has concluded that the snubbers successfully completed the testing program.
In addition, Commonwealth Edison intends to effect the modification and repairs performed on the Unit 2 snubbers on the remaining eleven (11) Unit 1 snubbers during the next Unit 1 refueling outage (currently scheduled to commence in January, 1981).
During the Unit 1 outage, Commonwealth Edison will randomly select one of the five snubbers repaired during the last outage and visually inspect that snubber to ensure the ef fectiveness of the modification.
Following completion of the modification in the remaining eleven Unit 1 snubbers, future inspections, surveillances, and testing will be accomplished per the Zion Station Technical Specifications.
Commonwealth Edison requests NRC Region III comments on the attached report and concurrence with the Unit 1 repair program.
A timely reply would be most appreciative as the Zion Unit 1 refueling outage plans are currently being finalized with regard to this issue.
