Dear Congressman Goodling:
This responds to your referral of October 21, 1980 of a letter from Ms. Douglas of Grantham, Pennsylvania regarding the adequacy of the hearing room which is being utilized by the NRC for the public hearings on the restart of TMI-1.
At the request"of NRC the General Services Administration arranged for the hearing room.
It was tasked by the NRC to locate suitably sized space to acconmodate a lengthy heaMng estimated to last for six months or longer and suitable adjacent office space for the presiding Aton:ic Safety and Licensing Board, court reporters and the parties to the proceeding. The required space was to be in a convenient location in HarMsburg that was readily accessible to members of the public.
Ideally, the appropdate location for such a heaMng would be in a Federal build-ing. Unfortunately, the required amount of space for the length of time desired was not available in a Federal building in Harrisburo. Consequently, GSA had to look elsewhere.
It found suitable hearing room facilities on the ground floor of the Walnut Street Garage and office space in an adjoining building.
Admittedly, the hearing room location is not perfect but it is' functional and appears, generally, to be adequate. We regret that Ms. Douglas found the loca-tion to be so inconvenient, but, at this juncture, it would appear impractical to seek an alternative location.
