Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Instrumentation for Detection of Inadequate Core Cooling Your letter of September 24, 1980 requests that Metropolitan Edison Company commit to develop an instrumentation system for detection of inadequate core cooling. Our letter of October 2, 1980 (TLL 500) to Mr. R. W.

Reid provided the staff the basis of our position that the existing instrumentation is sufficient.

Our position remains consistent with the October 2 letter and the letter dated October 7,1980 from J. II. Taylor of B&W to D. F. Ross of the NRC.

Met-Ed will provide a response as required by Action Plan II.F.2, Instrumentation for Detection of Inadequate Core Cooling by January 1, 1981.

Sincerely, z,f,al ']
