for the Yankee Atomic Electric Company Rove Plant the failure of the No. 1 energency diesel generator to complete a monthly surveillance test is reported as Abnormal Occurrence 73-5

~!

A routine monthly surveillance test of the No.1 emergency diesel generator was being performed on May 30, 1973 at approximately 1000 hours0.0116 days
0.278 hours
0.00165 weeks
3.805e-4 months
. The diesel started successfully but the operator noted an unstable governor condition prior to phasing the unit to the h80 volt He bus. The cperator tripped the machine and then attempted a restart.

was unable to do so and noted that the indicating light was out which monitors the power supply to the starting control circuit.

Se two fuses in the DC control circuit were found to.be b1'ovn.

The fuses were replaced followed by a successful diesel start and completion of the surveillance test.

Se cause for the blown fuses has not been determined. A redundant indicating light monitoring the starting circuit power supply outside the diesel cubicle had failed. A possibility exists that this' licht bulb may have been defective and through a short circuit may have reculted in the blevn fuses, i

' ne No. 2 and 3 diesel generators were started and operated with no incident during this period. The indicator lights on the No. 2 and 3 diesel generator control circuits were n'ormal.

Caly two out of the three emergency core cooling trains are

~

required for the LOCA condition. Protection for the reactor core or safety of the public was not jeopardized during the No. 1 emergency' diesel gener-ator cutage.

Very truly~yours, T UT hi h
