REVIEW OF~ LICENSE AMENCMENT APPLICATION FOR AUTHORIZATION TO POSSESS UP TO 300 GRAMS OF U-235 REVIEWER:

Background
By letter dated June 3,1980, the University of Illinois requested authorization to possess up to 300 grams of U-235 in the form of UF6 to be used in nuclear pump laser experiments. The experiment will be con-ducted at the Illinois Advanced Trigar Reactor within the provisions of facility license R-ll5 and will be performed under a contract with NASA for research purposes.
II.
Nuclear and Health Safety Mr. Robert Carter of NRR, Project Manager for facility license R-115, has reviewed the'UI's a'pplication and told me on August 22, 1980, that the nuclear pump laser experiment at the Illinois Advanced Trigar Reactor will be conducted in accordance with the Technical Specifications for reactor license R-ll5.
The ficensee's currently established management, radiological and nuclear safety procedures for the use of nuclear material are adequate to a'ssure that the materials 'are used properly.
IE Comments On August 22, 1980, I called Mr. Carl Paperiello, Chief of Material Radiological Protection Section I,.IE Region III, about UI's application.
He told me that there was no problem with this issuance of an amendment from IE's point of view.

AUG 2 91983 Conclusion
-Based on the discussion above, I believe that the amendment can be granted without undue risk to the researchers and the public. Therefore, I recommend approval of the application for license amendment.
