Dear Mr. Grier:
I.E. Bulletin 79-03A described longitudinal weld defects dis-covered in SA-312 type 304 stainless steel pipe.
ASME Code required nondestructive examinations did not detect centerline lack of weld penetration under all conditions.
In accordance with the instructions in the Bulletin, safety related systems which use SA-312 or A-312, type 300 series fusion welded pipe were identified.
The size, schedule, maximum system pressure and temperature was reviewed and compared to the reduced allowable stress values as required by the Bulletin.
In all cases, the system pressure-temperature values were much lower than the reduced Code allowable pressure-temperature values described in the Bulletin.
Therefore, the SA-312 stainless steel piping used at Shoreham can be considered to be adequate since it satisfies the criteria described in Item 1 of Bulletin 79-03A.
