Dresden Station Units 1, 2, and 3 Quad Cities Station Units 1 and 2 Zion Station Units 1 and 2 LaSalle Station Units 1 and 2 Byron Station Units 1 and 2 Braidwood Station Units 1 and 2 Response to IE Bulletin No.79-03A,
" Longitudinal Weld Defects in ASME SA-312, Type 304 Stainless Steel Pipe" NRC Docket Nos. 50-10/237/249, 50-254/265, 50-295/304, 50-373/374, 50-45A/455, and 50-456/457 Reference (a):
April 7, 1980 letter from J. G. Keppler to Cordell Reed
Dear Mr. Keppler:
Reference (a) transmitted IE Bulletin No.79-03A which requested Commonwealth Edison Company to provide information concerning the use of SA-312 or A-312, type 300 Series fussion welded pipe in safety-related systems subject to design stresses greater than 85 percent of the Code allowable stresses.
Commonwealth Edison's response for its Dresden, Quad Cities, Zion, LaSalle, Byron and Braidwood Stations follows.
A.
Operating Plants - Dresden, Quad Cities and Zion Stations In accordance with Reference (a), Commonwealth Edison has reviewed the above operating plants for the affected pipe.
A review was made of the design specifications and piping design tables for original construction as well as for modifications at these plants.
For all the units at these stations, the smaller pipe sizes (generally less than 14 inches nominal pipe size) are ASME SA-312 seamless pipe while the larger sizes are ASME SA-358 electric-fusion-welded pipe.
Therefore, based on this review, l
Commonwealth Edison has concluded that ASME SA-312 stainless steel pipe welded without filler metal is not present in the safety-related systems in the units at Dresden, Quad Cities and Zion Stations.

Construction Plants - LaSalle, Byron and Braidwood Stations In accordance with Reference (a), Commonwealth Edison has reviewed the above construction plants for the affected pipe.
A preliminary review of the seam-welded stainless steel products supplied to the LaSalle site indicates that ASME SA-312 stainless steel pipe welded without filler metal is not present in safety-related systems.
For Byron and Braidwood Stations, a preliminary review of the seam-welded stainless steel products supplied to the stations indicates that none of the subject product will be subjected to design stresses greater than 85 percent of the Code allowable stresses.
However, for the LaSalle, Byron and Braidwood sites, final confirr.iation from the suppliers is still necessary and is anticipated by September 15, 1980.
If the suppliers to either LaSalle or the Byron and Braidwood sites do not confirm these preliminary findings, Commonwealth Edison will supplement this response in accordance with the requirements of the Bulletin.
Please address any questions concerning this matter to this office.
