Dear Ms Borges and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission,
On behalf of dozens of South Carolina voters and activists (including myself) I am writing to urge you to deny Westinghouse's early application for a 40 year license renewal at their nuclear fuel manufacturing site near Columbia.
This facility has a long history of spills and accidents, which even the NRC's own reports suggest will continue if they are given a new license. There's also no reason to approve this license now, because the Page 1 of 2 12/04/2019 https://www.fdms.gov/fdms/getcontent?objectId=09000064841c413e&format=xml&showorig=false SUNSI Review Complete Template = ADM-013 E-RIDS=ADM-03 ADD: Jessie Muir Quintero COMMENT (35)

current license doesn't expire until 2027.
The NRC should deny this early renewal application and conduct a more detailed environmental impact statement. You should also require Westinghouse to go at least one full year without an accident or spill before they are allowed to re-apply.
I have worked for years to bring the dangers of nuclear power to light, and to resist the continued operation of nuclear plants in several states. As such, I, and many of the commenters included, bear no illusions that you will listen to our advice or heed our warnings. The NRC has shown itself time and time again to be the servant of the nuclear power industry and not the people. Still, I write to you, and enclose these letters and comments with sincere hope that I am wrong.
I invite you, a career public servant working in an unheralded role in an undervalued federal regulatory agency to imagine me, and the many people in South Carolina who live near this facility. Imagine how powerless we feel, writing comments year after year. Being ignored, year after year. Reading headlines about leaks and spills and errors and problems at the plant, year after year.
And I invite you to imagine a different outcome, this time; a different future that you and I and all the commenters here might share. A future where you, based on the comments in this docket, say "no" to the license extension - even temporarily.
Why not give yourself time to consider the EIS more closely, ask questions, hold public hearings. Encourage, or even require, Westinghouse executives to meet face-to-face with the people who live in the community and are impacted by their business every day. Wouldn't that be better? Isn't that a more courageous, effective, and empathetic response from your regulatory commission?
I won't hold my breath, but I do encourage you to Consider each comment here enclosed as an individual comment from an individual constituent. I'm bundling them for your convenience, but have also ensured that each one was sent individually, and in compliance with the rules at https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=NRC-2015-0039-0006 to the best of my ability Given the Thanksgiving Holiday is tomorrow, please extend this comment period so that more impacted residents have a chance to comment.

It is my hope that the NRC will take these comments seriously. It is very frustrating as a law abiding citizen that we feel the NRC is in cahoots with big business and dumping on SC like with Savannah River Plant.
In addition you should be as scared for your descendants as the rest of us. I suggest you read the book,
âœThis Civilization is Finishedâ. Instead of approving this application you should be requiring
âœfull speed ahead on alternative energy.
Thank you.
