Dear Dr. & Mrs. Casselberry:
I am writing in response to your letter of June 22, 1980, in which you raised two concerns about venting krypton-85 into the atmosphere. The purge of the krypton-85 from the TMI-2 reactor building began on June 28, 1980, and was essentially concluded on July 11, 1980. The estimated skin and whole body doses resulting from the purge were well below the values predicted in the staff's final environmental assessment.
You mentioned that you believe venting will be detrimental to your health and you wonder why venting will occur during July and August of 1980. First, I wish to reiterate the information in the " Final Environmental Assessment for Decontamination of the Three Mile Island Unit 2 Reactor Building Atmosphere" by federal and state officials and by professional associations that the vent-ing would in no way be detrimental to the health of people in the vicinity of Three Mile Island.
In addition, I have enclosed for your infomation a copy of a report from the Pennsylvania Medical Society, which states that venting of the krypton-85 is biologically safe.
Although weather most favorable for purging occurs from March through May, purging at other times of the year is permissible as long as weather condi-tions are favorable. During the purge, existing meteorological conditions were used to calculate hourly dose rates in affected areas surrounding the plant to ensure compliance with the federal limits imposed on the purge.
Please see questions 31-36 in the enclosed " Answers to Questions About Removing Krypton from the Three Mile Island, Unit 2 Reactor Building" (NUREG-0673).
I trust this infomation adequately responds to your concerns.
Sincerely,
/N

Dear Mr. Snyder,
It was with great interest that we read the final N.R.C. staff report. One of the major concerns with many area residents near T.M.I.
still is whether or not the purging of krypton gas into the atmos-phere is really safe. Many of us continue to believe that it will be detrimental to our health. We have read all the alternative me thod s of purging the gas and question why one of those method s could not have been started months or even a year ago. We do realise the need for some action of clean -up, before further deterioration results. What it really seems to have come down to is not what is safest for the community but what is cheapest for Met-Ed.
Many loen1 meteorologists have p61nted out that the two months of July and August when the cas is to be vented, are the two months of the most starnant air in the area. Therefor it now seems that not only has the worst method of clean up was chosen, but also the worst months of the year for stagnant air masses.
Sincerely,
Dr. &Mrs.
