Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item cn Inadegaate Penetration for Dravo Lugs (#41) .

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On March 24, 1981, Detroit Ediscn's Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor - Cen-struction Ocality Assurance, telephoned Mr. J.E. Konklin of MRC Regica III, to report en a preb1cm with inadequate penetration for lugs welded cn Dravo supplied pipe spels at the Fec.i 2 Site.

It had been noted en a rcutine inspection of a pipe support that a lug which had been welded to the pipe in the shcp by Dravo did rot appear to have adequate penetraticn. This lug as well as other Dravo lugs were to have been full penetratien aelded to large bore pipe at specific loca-tions. Subsequent inspecticn of other Dravo installed lugs indicated that the prchlem existed at a nu:-ber of other 1ccaticns. At the present time, the prcblem has been noted a*. nine (9) lug 1ccations throughcut several systers at the Fen-12 Plant. A turved lug indicates that there is a lack of penetration in the entire length of the lug en the centerline. It is felt that a failure of these lugs would darage safety related systers at the Fer::12 Plant.

Another report en this item, either interin or final, is scheduled to te sent to ycu en er before August 21, 1981. If you have questions ccncern-ing this ratter, please catact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor - Ccnstructicn Quality Assurance.

Very ' y veurs t 9 4 Donald A. Wells, Manager Quality Assurance DTM/EIM/pn
