MANUFA CT URE: .

Process - Shall be made by either the open hearth, electric furnace, or a basic oxygen furnace proce ss.

Defects - The material shall be free from injurious defects and shall have a workmanlike finish. For slabs, defects resulting from shear drag or otherwise shall not extend more than 3 inches in from an end.

Finlah - Far slabs, a uniformly corrugated surface with grooves not exceeding a depth of 0.060 inch is acceptable. , _ , , ,

- B50A357A, B, C, and F - Plates over 4 inch in thickness shall be uniform 13 normalized to produce grain refinement. Heat treatment involving quenching in a liquid medium is not permitted.

B50A357A2, B2 and F2 - Plates over 4 inch in thickness will be accepted on the basis of mill tests made on specimens that have been normalized to produce grain refinement and to meet the test requirements. This heat treatment shall be reported with the test results in the. certificate ' !

t TEST SPECIMENS:

B50A357A, A2, B, B2, F and F2 ' Longitudinal test specimens shall be

- prepared from the material in its rolled or normalized condition as the ,

case may be, or from full thickness samples similarly and simultaneously

~

normalized. The tensile bars shall represent the full thickness of the  !

material or, in plate over 1 1/2 inch in thickness, they may conform to !

standard 2-inch gage length round test specimens and be removed midway' between one rolled surface and the center of the plate.

The bend bars shall epresent the full thickne_ss of the plate except where the thickness exceeds 1 1/2 inches, in which case a 3/4-inch thick bar or a 1 by 1/2 inch cross section bar may be prepared. When f

the bend specimen has a reduced thickness, the rolled surface shall be on the outer curve of the bend.

Two tension and two bend tests shall be made from each heat unless ,

the finished material from a heat is less than 30 tons when one tension and one bend test will be sufficient. However, for material 2 inch and under in thickness, if the material from one heat differs 3/8 inch or more in thickness, one tension test and one bend test shall be made from both the thickest and thinnest material rolled regardless of the weight represented. For material over 2 inch in thickness, if the j

material from one heat differs 1 inch or more in thickness, one tension l .

and one bend test shall be made for each 1-inch gage grouping regardless ,

l of the weight represented.

l B50A357C - A longitudinal and a transverse tensile specimen shall be ,

l , prepared from each plate in its rolled or normalized condition as the '

case may be. These specimens shall be taken from a small (24-inch maximum diameter) slug of material removed from the center of the.

, plate area. They shall be standard 2-inch gage length test bars re-l moved midway between one rolled surface and the midthickness of the j slug, or 1/4 the thickness from a rolled surface. The longitudinal l specimen shall be taken parallel to the direction of rolling and the transverse specimen perpendicular to the direction of rolling.

Bend tests are not required.
