Dear Mr. Clayton:

Subject:

High Energy Line Breaks and Consequential Control System Failures You were informed by IE Information Notice 79-22, issued September 14, 1979, that certain non-safety grade equipment, if subjected to an adverse environment, could impact the safety analysis and the adequacy of the protective functions performed by safety grade equipment. A letter issued September 17, 1979 by Mr. Harold R. Denton, Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, required you to submit written statements concerning this matter on Farley Unit 1.

Your reply, dated October 5,1979 is still being reviewed along with replies from all other operating reactors.

Simular conditions exist for Farley Unit 2.

You are, therefore, requested to perform a review to determine what, if any, design changes or operator actions would be necessary to assure that high energy line breaks will not cause control system failures to complicate the event beyond the FSAR analysis.

l Provide the results of your review including all identified problems for Farley Unit 2 and the manner in which you resolved them to NRR.

You may refer to the analysis for Farley Unit 1 if it applies directly to Farley Unit 2.

Your submittals for both plants will be reviewed and further action may be required when a final staff position is established.

If possible, both Units 1 and 2 should be addressed together in correspondence concerning this matter. You are requested to respond within 60 days of receipt of this letter.

Sincerely, I

M %
