Attention: Mr. James G. Particw r, f T,

Material Control Licensing Branch Gentlemen:

My letter of December 2,1980 requested an extensica of the thirty day require-ment specified for reconciliation of SMI Inventories.

As discussed with representatives of your staff, revised productica schedules now indicate that our next inventory of SMI should occur on December 29, 1930.

'Ihe requirements of this inventcry, ccr:pany closings and vendors performing analytical services for us will still necessitate additicnal time beyond the thirty day reccnciliation period.

Catbustion Engineering, Inc., requests, therefcre, that its final reconciliation date be extended fran the thirty day requirement to February 16, 1981.

This additional time (apprcximately 19 days) should be sufficient to cover the situations described above.

Very truly yours,

US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Division of Safeguards 7915 Eastern Avenue - Wiltse Building Mail Stop 881-SS Silver Spring, Maryland 20910 Attnr Mr. James G. Partlow Chief Material Control Licensing Branch Gentlemen:

Current production schedules indicate that ur next inventory of SNM should occur during the week of December 15, 1980.

It is conceivable that a complete rec 9nciliation within the thirty day required period might be difficult to achieveytlue to the requirements of this inventory, company closings and the holiday s edules of vendors performing our analytical measurements.

Representatives of our respect'v/e staffs met in your office on Nov. 6,1980 to discuss this inventory. One f the topics discussed was the allowance of additional time to complete the reconc' iation. No objection to the submittal and approval of such an application wa raised.

Combustion Engineering nc. requests, therefore, that it be granted an extension

- of final reconciliati time from thirty days after the start of the inventory to a January 31, 19 final reconciliation date. This additional time (approximately 15 days) should be ufficient to cover the situations described above.

Very-trul y rs,
