Component Cooling Pump Control Circuitry
Dear Mr. Grier:
In accordance with 10CFRZ1 require:ents, this is to document that
. Mr. S. D. Ebneter of Region I was notified by telephone on December 10, 1980, at approximately 8:15 a.m.,
of a potential reportable event.
Name of Individual k*no Reported Stephen J. Torna - Manager, Inspection & Material Services, who was acting for the Quality Assurance Division General Manager, made the call.
Activity Involved Gilbert Associates, Inc. (GAI) design of control circuitry for component cooling pump.
Components Involved Not applicable.
Facility Involved V. C. Summer Nuclear Station, Unit 1, being constructed by the South Carolina Electric & Gas Cocpany.

US Nuclear Regulatory Co ission December 11, 195C Mr. B. H. Grier Page 2 N. R. Barker Nature of Defect An interlock contact was not provided in the control circuit of the swing pu=p, which prevented it frc startin; on a lead sequencer signal when it was lined up as the pri=at; pimp.
This error was discovered and docu=ented during routine testing.
The safety hazard which could be created by failure of the pump to start, is possible loss cf cc=penent cooling water.
Date Infor=ation Obtained A written report indicating this to be potentially reportable, j
was received by the Quality Assurance Division on Decenber 4,1980, from GAI Engineering.
Corrective Action The circuitry has been redesig-ed to include an "af terstart" from pump "C" across the cell switch of pu=p "A" and pump "B" in the "C" pu=p "A" and "B" channels breaker start c r:"*?ry.

We have determined that this cenditien does not exist on any of our other design projects.
