R. E. Martin, Project Manager Operating Reactors Branch #3, DL

SUBJECT:

ANO-2 FIRE PROTECTION An updated scorecard on the status of the ANO-2 fire protection items is needed so we can manage the application of Appendix R to ANO-2.

The licensee has requested it so they know more clearly what to respond to. We wish to address by this memo only the status of the staff's review and approval of these items. Status of the licensee's implementation of these items at the plant is another subject.

The twenty (20) areas of fire protection review listed on page 3-4 of the FPSER are categorized below. Based on my consnunications with R. Ferguson and S. Hudson of the CEB I am proceeding with the ANO-2 fire protection program on the assumption that these items are correctly categorized.

If that is not a correct assumption please advise.

I.

These items were approved in the FPSER, did not require additional information for NRC to evaluate, do not appear to require further evaluation pursuant to Appendix R and are therefore believed to be l

closed.

3.13 Portable Extinguisher for C.R.

3.16 Portable Smoke Exhaust Equipment 3.19 Control of Fire Doors 3.20 Administrative Control Changes II. These items were explicitly approved in our letters of April 25, 1980 and November 5,1980 and no further question regarding their meetir.g Appendix R exists.

3.14 Smoke Detectors 3.15 Manual Hose Stations 3.18 RCP Oil Collection System 8012240 /o f

. III. These items were explicitly identified as unresolved in our November 5,1980 letter to the licensee based on our evaluation against Appendix R.

The licensee must resolve these items in accordance with Enclosure 1.

IV These items were either explicitely approved by prior staff letters to the licensee (3.6) or were not addressed at all beyond the FPSER bt.t are believed to be the subject of the backfitting of Aprendix R requirements. The licensee must resclve in accordance with Enclosurc 1.
