NUSCALE POWER, LLC, DESIGN CERTIFICATION APPLICATION PHASE 4 REVIEW STATUS
Dear Mr. Bergman:
The purpose of this letter is to communicate the status of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs Phase 4 review of the NuScale Power, LLC (NuScale) Design Certification Application (DCA).1 This letter is a follow-up to the status letter we sent to NuScale on May 16, 2019 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS)
Accession No. ML19122A050). On December 12, 2019, the NRC staff achieved the Phase 4 milestone by completing all 21 chapters of the Advanced Safety Evaluation Report2 (SER) and issuing them to the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS).
The NRC staff remains confident that the overall review schedule of 42 months will be met in September 2020. In support of the overall schedule, the NRC staff has begun supporting ACRS review of the five topical focus areas with staff presentations made to the ACRS. Over the next several months, the NRC staff will engage the ACRS on each of the topical areas proposed by the Committee in its letter dated September 5, 2019 (ADAMS Accession No. ML19269B682), in addition to the three topical report reviews associated with the DCA and any individual chapter items that warrant additional Committee review.
The NRC staff expects to receive Revision 4 of the NuScale DCA Part 2, Tier 2 (the Final Safety Analysis Report), from you in January 2020 in order to be able to close out the confirmatory items and complete the Final Safety Evaluation Report.
