This refers to your application dated September 29, 1980 requesting an amendment to Certificate of Compliance No. 9010 to authorize the use of an alternate personnel barrier arrangement.
We note that for the proposed use of the alternate personnel barrier that (1) the accessible surface of the cask in transport is changed and (2) the vehicle would not be classified as a " closed transport vehicle" pursuant to 49 CFR 5173.389(q).
In connection with our review of the application, please state the maximum temperature that will be permitted on an accessible surface of the package during transport, the maximum decay heat per package, and provide the supporting assessment when the alternate personnel barrier is used. Also, please discuss the radiation limit that will be followad for an open exclusive-use vehicle when the alternate personnel barrier is used.
Please let us know within thirty (30) days from the date of this letter when the above information will be provided.
