Subject:

NRC Action Plan Item-II.K.3 30; Revised Small-Break LOCA. Methods

Dear Sir:

In response to the Requirement II.K.3 30, Revised Small Break LOCA

[

Methods to Show Compliance with 10CFR50, Appendix K, Vermont Yankee considers i

that the reactor vendor, General Electric Company, -is currently the most appropriate party to work with the staff in resolving staff concerns with small break LOCA models for BWRs. Accordingly, the staff should direct their questions regarding the scope and schedde for this requirement to General Electric (Attn. R. H. Buchholz, Manager, BWR Systems Licensing). Copies of correspondence on this item should be sent to this office so that we may remain cognizant of the progress of the program to resolve the staff's concerns on this requirement. GE has informed us that they will be prepared to discuss tne approach to this item by December 15, 1980.

~

Further, as you may be aware, Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) is currently developing BWR LOCA analysis capability to address the entire break spectrum requirements, including BWR small breaks.

YAEC is aware of the NRC's concerns and plans to address them during their methods development and qualification work.

Should you have any questions regarding this submittal, please contact us.

Very truly yours, VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER CORPORATION h
