Dear Mr. Keppler:

10CFR50.55(e) Item on Containment Gas Monitoring System On June 23, 1980, Mr. H. A. Valker of Detroit Edison's quality As~su~rance Department, telephoned Mr. Van Dell of HRC Region lil to report that we had recelved notification from Comsip, Inc., the supplier of the Feg 1 Con-tainment Gas Monitoring-System, that they had reported problems to NRC Region V under 10CFlQL requirements. It was reported that a pump malfunction during a test at Comsip on a similar systeni had created excessive pressure which could conceivably rupture the diaphragm and breach the containment integrity of the system.

The correspondence from Comsip, Inc., stated that a kit will be made available to add a bypass on the discharge of the pump to prevent deadheading,'which

- will eliminate excessive pressure and the possibility of this type of failure or damage. Two kits arid the associated documentati'ori have bien req 6ested by Detroit Edison, but have not yet been received. A Field Modification Request has been prepared by Edison Engineering whic~h'will allow for,the modifications to be made in a controlled manner. - --

A final report on this item is scheduled to be submitted to you before December,,19, 1980. If you have any questions concerning this matter,-please contact Mr. H. A. Walker, Supervisor, Consturction Quality Assurance.

.. _ _ Very truly yours,
