Reference No. 1 required PWR Licensees to proceed with an evaluation of the overall asymmetric loss of coolant accident (LOCA) loads. A status report of this evaluation was submitted to you earlier this year by Reference Nos. 2 and'-?.
We have reviewed the final Phase 2 report prepared by Babcock & Wilcox (BAW-1621),
which was transmitted to you by Reference No. 4, and have determined that the report is applicable to TMI-1.
The report demonstrates the ability of TMI-1 to withstaad the effects of asymmetric LOCA loads and maintain a coolable core geometry for all breaks except a large hot leg break. TMI-1 can also withstand a large hot leg break provided that the hot leg break opening area "A" is limited to 0.844A (See Section 12.0 of Reference No. 4). The required 030 S

TMI-l will modify the hot leg restraints, as necessary, during the first refueling following restart.
