DOCKET NO.
50-309 UNIT Maine Yankee DATE 800911 CC:4PLETED BY F. C. Beers TELEPHONE 617-366-9011 X2215 REPORT '10 NTH August, 1980 SU:0!ARY OF OPE?.ATING EXPERIENCES At the beginning of the month the plant was operating at full load.
At %1145 hrs, on August 2nd, increased running amperage was observed on the P-2A feedwater pump along with bearing oil pressure alarm.
An immediate load reduction was commenced in an attempt to bring load down to N60*,.o permit securing P-2A.
Shortly after 1200 P-2A auto-tripped. Operators continued with a rapid load reduction, but due to sluggish response of the main feedwater regulating valves, a turbine / reactor trip occurred on high steam generator water. level.
The plant responded normally to the trip.
The following day the plant was brought back on-line and, on August 4, was stabilized at %60% load operating with only the P'2B feedwater pump.
Due to the amount of damage sustained by P-2A, a definite cause for the failure could tot be determined, either by plant personnel or the pump manufacturer's representative.
Plant operations continued at %60% while repairs were made to P-2A.
On August 8, steam was secured to the 1st point feedwater heaters allowing an increase in steam flow to the turbine and an increase in electrical output. Reactor power was increased to N65% to compensate for the loss of efficiency.
On August 28th, CEA #61 dropped into the core. Fewer dropped from N65% to %53% and was stabilized around 60%.
The A was retrieved and power raised back up to 65%.
No cause for the, opped CEls could be determined.
By August 30th, retairs had been completed on the P-2A feedwater pump
)
and power escalatior commenced.
The plant was back at full load on l
August 31st.
