Attachment to AECM-81/74 Page 1 of 1 STATUS REPORT NO. 1 TO PRD-81/03 I. Description of the Deficiency This deficiency concerns certain Yarway, motor operated valves

, in use at CGNS. The problem exists whereby when the valves energized to " closed", a torque switch de-energizes upon full valve closure. The valves then back off the seats which causes re-energizing of the torque switch, which recloses the valve. This repeated cycle causes a " valve chatter" condition.

Systems currently affected are the Residual Heat Removal System (E12). Applicability to Unit 2 is still under investigation.

Investigations into safety implications are currently in pro-gress. The Constructor will work with our NSSS supplier to determine applicability to NSSS systems.

II. Approach to Resolution of the Problem Our approach is to ensure all affected valves are identified and located. Once that is done, proper investigation into impact on safety can be determined and proper corrective actions developed.

III. Status of Proposed Resolution

{ Our investigations into the scope and safety impact continue.

IV. Reason for Delay in Final Report The final report will be made upon completion of evaluations of the constructor's and NSSS vendor's final responses. We currently are not iri'~fec'eipt of' fiiJ1~r~eiiponse from either ~

organization.

V. Projected Completion Date of Final Report We project completion of corrective actions and submission of a final report by November 18, 1981.
