Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Re: Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440, 50-441 Ultimate Capacity Analysis of Mark III Containments

Dear Mr. Tedesco:

The subject letter received December 26, 1980 requested our schedule for perform-ing an ultimate capacity analysis for the Perry Mark III containment design. After a preliminary review of this request, we feel that a static pressure analysis for the surfaces of the Perry containment with minimum sectional strength could be completed by November, 1981.

We cannot provide at this time a commitment to your request for a dynamic analy-sis because the necessary assumptions and criteria to perform such an analysis are not available. Therefore, any dynamic analysis would probably produce ambi-guous and unsupportable results leading to incorrect conclusions on Mark III con-tainment modifications which might be required for pos t accident hydrogen control.

We will continue to follow the post accident hydrogen control / containment capa-bility issue through NRC information releases, association with our nuclear project with pressure suppression containments, and participation with the AIF Industry Degraded Core Ruleworking (IDCOR) program. Should complications arise during our static pressure studies we will inform you of any necessary schedule modifi-cations.

Very truly yours,

~
