Dear Mr. MacDonald:
We respectfully request revision of Certificate of Compliance No. 9111, Model CN6-80A, to permit use of inproved materials of construction and a strengthened outer shell.
The requested change to materials of construction would perntit use of ASTM A-516, Grade 70 material in all instances where ASTM A-36 is presently specified.
ASTM A-516, Grade 70 possesses slightly improved strength properties over A-36 (5% greater yield stress and 20% greater ultimate stress) and clearly superior brittle fracture resistance properties, possessing a nil-ductility transition temperature some 40 -
500 below that of A-36.
The second requested change increases outer shell thickness from 1 inch to 1-1/8 inch.
Of note, this strengthened outer shell has essentially no impact upon the existing Safety Analysis Report but was altered to provide added puncture resistance should the package be subsequently submitted for evaluation as a Type B package.
Enclosed is our check number 5360 for $150.00 to cover the minor amendment fee for Category llE Packages under 10 CFR 170.31.
Eight (8) copies of the amended pages, plus instruc-tions for their corporation into the original application, are enclosed.
We trust this information is acceptable and suffic-ient to permit issuance of the revised certificate in the shortest possible time.
