SUBJECT:

MCAR 42, Issued 9/24/80 Loose Hanger Standard Parts Bushings INTERIM REPORT 2 DATE:

PROJECT:

Consumers Power Company Midland Plant Units 1 and 2 Bechtel Job 7220 STATUS OF CORRECTIVE ACTION AND INVESTICATION The status of actions in progress for resolution of the subject Management Corrective Action Report (MCAR) is as follows:

1.

Complete identification, location, and inspection of sway struts furnished to the Midland plant by Corner & Lada, Inc., ITT Crinnall, Pacific Scientific, NPS, and Bergen-Paterson has not been initiated pending a generic solution which is applicable and acceptable to all the vendors and Bechtel.

2.

The manufacturer's recommended procedures for resolving the deficiencies without precluding warranties were requested from all suppliers of sway struts.

Both Corner & Lada and NPS responded with procedures which require staking; however, several sway struts that were initially staked have been identified as loose or dislodged.

ITT Crinnell's response was incomplete and is being pursued further.

Bergen-Paterson requested return of a sway strut assembly for examination prior to providing its tecommendation.

The sway strut assembly was returned to Bergen-Paterson and we are awaiting its reply.

3.

The use of spacers, tack welding, or pinning is being considered to restrain any bushir.g that is identified as loese and/or where total bushing disengagement is possible.

Spacers would be sized such that disengagement of the self-aligning ball bushing would be prevented by restraining the rod end paddle from excessive side motion without precluding design function.

Bechtel Associates ProfessionalCorporation 018090 MCAR 42 Interim Report 2 Page 2 These solutions are being investigated ar1 will be coordinated with'all vendors in an attempt to obtain a generic solution for all sway strut bushings involved.

Our next report on this subject will Le issued by 2/9/81.
