Three Mile Island Hearings

Daar Commissioners:

ty I was appalled to read in the paper that you-only-

.recently have started to hold' hearings whether GPU should be.

allowed to reopen Unit: 1 of the Three Mile Island compler and-Snct it might take you more than six months to reach a decision.

I an one of the many thousands of retired people. on a fixed inuone who is a customer of GIU and stockholder. Your procrastination ic affecting our livelihood on both the income and expense sides 2nd, along riith the Government's inability to stop the devaluation of our money, is producing intolerable situations.

There is no ouestion that to have the energy we need vie must mdke use of our existing nuclear facilities. The failure-to do so

-subjects us even more to the whims of the foneign oil producing nations and their ability to cripple our supplies and increase our prices. The planning of so many years to rely. on nuclear power

.cannot be reversed with a snap of the fingers.

I drive-a car daily and do many things around my home. Both activities are among our biggest accident sources and killers, but we. don't let ourselves get so paranoic that we don't do them.

-Houefully we; drive defensively and -don't-stick our fingers or toes under the lawnmower. We have to use nuclear power with the same rationality, safely, but use it. Practically nothing we do is

.rickless.

If you let GPU or any of it's subsidiaries go bankrupt, you

-wfl1 be destroying the electrical utility. industry in this country. - --

7tho is going to buy stock in or loan money-to an industry that is tso subject to such a national regalatory group? Last year I sold a.small bond holding in the VInshington Public Power Supply System

.for exactly that reason.

Certainly the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has to share the

. burden of whatever condition the nuclear utilities are in.The fact that the Commission.may~be self conscious over that condition should not render them unable to make hard unemotional decisions that

.must be made.

I urge you to rapidly proceed with the relicensing of Unit 1 The welfare of the majority of the residents of the GPU area requires it.

S.incerely yo h/
