Proposed Schedule for Remaining Torus Modification at Vermont Yankee

Dear Sir:

This letter is written to document information given to Mr. R. Clark of your staff during a telephone conversation on January 9, 1981.

Mr. Clark requested information regarding Vermont Yankee's intentions for completing the modifications required by the Mark I Program.

Reference (b) documented our proposed schedule for completing Mark I Program activities. All modifications identified in Reference (b), with the exception of torus piping re-support, have been completed. Due to problems incurred in running the generic computer program, the torus external attached piping analysis has not been completed; as such, these modifications cannot be implemented during the Fall 1981 refueling outage as tentatively proposed in Reference (b). Our engineering consultant informs us that results of the piping analysis will be available by mid-1981. In addition, the Vermont Yankee Plant Unique Torus analysis, which will confirm torus shell motions for shell-piping interaction analysis will not be available until Fall 1981. Until both these analysis are complete, the extent and nature of any attached piping modifications /resupport, is unknown.

Recognizing the long lead times associated with the procurement / delivery of nuclear-grade materials, such as snubbers, the earliest, reasonable date that Vermont Yankee could commit to for completing any required modifications would be the end of the 1983 refueling outage, tentatively scheduled for April 1983.

We trust, this information is satisfactory; however, should additional 8101360 y47 p
