ENCLOSURE RESPONSE TO IE BULLETIN 80-07 BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT UNIT 3 (DOCKET NO. 50-296)

Browns Ferry unit 3 began a scheduled refueling outage on November 23, 1980.

The inspection and examinations required by items A.1 and A.2 of IE Bulletin 80-07 were performed.

Pursuant to item A.3 ve are providing the following report.

On December 4, 5 and 6,1980, the jet pump assemblies in Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant unit 3 reactor were inspected in accordance with TVA Mechanical Maintenance Instruction 14.3-A.

This procedure meets all of the requirements in IE Bulletin 80-07, including ultrasonic examination of the jet pump holddown beam.

Ultrasonic examination of the jet pump holddown beams was performed by General Electric Company (GE) employees on December 4 and 5. 1980. in accordance with GE procedure TP-508.0654, Revision C.

This procedure is for BWR/4 jet pump holddown beams and is equivalent to the procedure referenced in IE Bulletin 80-07, GE procedure TP-508-0642, Revision A.

The four-hour examination did not' detect any indications in the holddown beams.

Visual inspection of the jet pump assembly took place on December 5 and 6, 1980. The jet pump holddown beams were inspected by lowering a camera by its power cable. The lower sections were inspected in a similar fashion except a peanut light was taped to the camera to provide lighting.

The resolution of the camera was verified by observing 1-mil cracks on a metallurgical sample. The integrity of all jet pump assemblies was verified. The inspection of the jet pump assemblies took approximately eight hours.
