Dear Mr. Grier:

The reference letter provided an interim generic response to IE Bulletin 79-03A concerning the use or potential use of fusion-welded SA-312 Type 304 stainless steel pipe. The substance of the reference response was that none of the pipe manuf acturers previously identified by NRC; i.e.

Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co.; SWEPC0 Tube Corporation; ARMC0 Advance Material Division and Crucible Steel Co., have furnished to either Callaway 1 or Wolf Creek any of the subject pipe materials for use in piping systems in which the design hoop stresses equal or exceed 85 percent of ASME Code allowable. The reference letter indicated that further investigations were continuing to determine the use of these materials in components other than piping system components. Materials furnished by manufacturers other than the four cited in the NRC Bulletin would also be considered in the follow on SNUPPS response.

The purpose of this letter is to update the reference generic response.

S i r, last August, SNUPPS has been able to confirm that, within the Lead A/E 5 cope of Supply, fusion-welded SA-312 Type 304 pipe materials supplied by manuf acturers other than the four cited above have not been used in piping systems in which the hoop stresses equal or exceed the 85 percent level specified. The same conclusions have also been developed regarding the use of these materials in components, other than piping system compo-nents, furnished by the Lead A/E. Data with respect to the use of these materials in non-piping system components furnished by the NSSS supplier are being obtained directly through a review of data packages located at the SNUPPS jobsites. Additionally, data packages for replacement pipe materials purchased directly by the Wolf Creek constructor are being ex-amined as part of the follow-up to the Bulletin.
