FACILITY: Arkansas Power and Light Company Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 (DN50-368)

SUBJECT:

MOTOR TO PUMP DRIVE SHAFT FAILURE THAT WILL REQUIRE MORE THAN U TWO DAYS TO REPAIR

At 4:14 p.m. (CST) December 5,1980, the Unit was manually scramed when a main feedwater regulator valve failed to open and caused the operatinfmafn feecwater pump to trip.

p At 6:05 p.m. on December 5,1980, the shaft coupling the emergency feedwater pump to the electric motor twisted in two when the emergency feedwater pump bearings siezed.

The steam driven emergency feedwater pump and other necessary safety-related equipment functioned as designed.

The licensee is in the process of reassembling the electrically driven emergency feedwater pump. The licensee estimates that reassemoly and testing of this pump and motor will be completed on Decemoer 11, 1980.

Unit re-start is tenta-

ively scheduled for December 11, 1980.

The licensee has notified the appropriate Federal and State Agencies.

The licensee has not issued a press release.

I Region IV received initial notification of the Unit trip at approximately 6:30 p.m. on December 5,1980. Up-date information was received from the Resident Inspectors on December 8,1980, and at 8:30 a.m. on December 9,1980.
