PRELIMIf!ARY NOTIFICATION pc6 PRELIMIt'ARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT PNS-V-80/10 December 8, 1980 This orelininary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest sienificance.

At approximately 11:15 pm, PST, Friday, December 5, 1980, two Rancho Seco Security Guardsonroutineprotectedareapatrol,heardwhattheybelievedQobe 3 to 5 shots from a firearm.
The guards believing they were being> fired i on initiated a security alert.
The licensees armored vehicle responded to the Northwest side of the facility, the area from which the guards believed the shots came.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department was notified and responded in 5 minutes with a helicopter.
The protected area and Northwest owner controlled area were searched by Rancho Seco guards and Sheriff Department Deputies, with negative results.
The owner controlled and protected areas were thoroughly searched the mornini of Saturday, December 6,1980, with negative results.
No press releases have been planned by the utility, the NRC does.no't plan to issue a press release at this time.
