STN 50-482, STN 50-483, STN 50-486 Ref: SLNRC 79-16 dtd. 10/5/79: NRC/IE Bulletin 79-03, Pipe Manufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co.

Dear Mr. Grie :

The r'eference letter forwarded a generic SNUPPS response to IE Bulletin 79-03 concerning the use or potential use of SA-312, Type 304 stainless steel fusion welded pipe manufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co..

The substance of the reference SNUPPS response was that no piping systems had been found as of October 1979 containing Youngstown materials with hoop stress equal to or greater than 85 percent of ASME Code allow-able.

Since the time of the reference SNUPPS submittal, and in response to the subject Bulletin revision our search has been expanded to cover the use s

of fusion welded SA-312 T;pe 304 stainless steel pipe furnished or sched-uled to be furnished by manufacturers other than Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co. To date, our review has focused on the use or prospective use in piping systems of materials furnished by the following additional manufacturers identified in the subject Bulletin.

O ARAMCO Adve-Material Division 0 SWEPC0 Tuh ation 0 Crucible breen.. cat Tube Divslon Our investigation to date indicates that none of these piping manufac-turers, including Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co., have furnished any of the subject pipe materials for use in piping systems in which design hoop stresses equal or exceed 85 percent of ASME Code allowable..This conclusion is provided on a generic basis and is applicable to Callaway Unit No. I and Wolf Creek.

No piping systems have yet been fabricated for Callaway Unit No. 2.

- Further investigations are continuing to determine the use of the sub-ject material in components other than piping systems components and will include material manufacturers other than the four cited by NRC IE Bulletins 79-03 and 79-03A.

A final report addressing these remaining items will be forwarded to NRC by Nov. 30,.1980.

Backup data supporting this interim report are available for NRC re-view and discussion.
