ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION -
UNIT 1 - PERMITTED EXEMPTIONS UNDER IWB-122 0 (b) (1) OF SECTION XI OF THE ASME CODE
Dear Mr. Schwencer:
This is in reply to your letter of August 21, 1980.
Subsequent to the receipt of the above letter, we have done con-siderable review of the referenced subject.
We believe that the current NRC Staff interpretation of the 1974 Edition of Section XI differs from previous NRC Staff interpretations.
In the interest of resolving this matter, however, we are taking the following position:
1.
The limiting pipe diameters for exemption under IWB-1220 (b) (1) will be revised to 1.11 in, for water and 2.22 in, for steam in accordance with NRC calculations.
2.
Ten (10) additional lines will be inspected using the revised exemption diameters; this will involve the inspection of approximately 170 additional weld joints on Class I piping.
3.
Since many of the welds in Item 2 above have socket weld fittings and ultrasonic testing is generally impractical, the additional welds referenced above will be given a surface examination (PT).
4.
A surface examination of the additional weld joints is consistent with_the Zimmer ISI Program Plan which is being prepared in accordance'with the 1977 Edition of Section XI with Addenda through Summer 1978.
