Dear Mr. Grier:

The reference letter forwarded a generic SNUPPS response to IE Bulletin 79-03 concerning the use or potential use of SA-312, Type 304 stainless steel fusion welded pipe manufactured by Youngstown Welding and Engineering

.Co.. The substance of the reference SNUPPS response was that no oiping systems had been found as of October 1979 containing Youngstown materials with hoop stress equal.to or greater than 85 percent of ASME Code allow-able.

Since the time of the reference SNUPPS submittal, and in response to the subject Bulletin revision, our search has been expanded to cover the use of fusion welded SA-312 Type 304 stainless steel p he furnished or sched-uled to be furnished by manufacturers other than Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co. To date, our review has focused on the use or prospective use in piping systems of materials furnished by the following additional manufacturers identified in the subject Bulletin.

O ARAMCO Advanced Material Division 0 SWEPC0' Tube Corporation 0 Crucible' Steel / Treat Tube Divsion Our investigation to date indicates that none of these piping manufac-turers, including Youngstown Welding and Engineering Co., have furnished any of the subject ' pipe materials for use in Dioing systems in which design hoop stresses equal or exceed 85 percent of A5ME Code allowable. Th is conclusion is provided on a generic basis and is applicable to Callaway

. Unit No.'l and Wolf Creek. No piping systems have yet been fabricated for Callaway Unit No. 2.

A. final report addressing these remaining-items will be forwarded to NRC by Nov. 30, 1980.
