50-237 50-249 DEFICIENCY - Thermoluminee,7nt Dosimetry Discussion Following an inspaction on May 5-6, 10-11, and 18, 1976, by Dr. M. J. Osstmann of the NRC, Dresden was cited with one deficiency item.

Contrary to Appendix A, Tech Spec 6.6.C.2.s.(10),

Dresden did not provide an explanation in the July-December,1975 Semi-Annual Report of the slightly elevated results reported for TLD's at Onsite Station No. 2.

The elevated TLD results were mentioned in section 5.1 paragraph 3 (page 30) of the Semi-Annual Report.

However, discussions with Dr. Osstnann i.1dicated that the discussion was not an adequate c'xplanation of why the reading was high.

~

Corrective Action Onsite Station #2 is located about 1/4 mile NE of the

.w Unit 1 turbine building.

At this distance, some elevation in readings could be expected due to gamma shine from N-16.

This elevation is very slight as can be seen from the July to a,

December 1975 Semi-Annual Report.

The elevation ranges between 1 and 3 mrem /uk (

.02 mrem /hr) and is not evident at offsita stations.

sp-

.I Due to this problem, in April 1969, a second set of ion chambers were placed behind a 1/2" lead barrier set approximately' 12" from the chambers in the direction of the Unit 1 turbine building.

This' reduced the excess radiation level by approximately a factor of two.

O These data and the purpose of the shielded / unshielded dosimeters were discussed with the NRC (then AEC) in a meeting in Bethesda on January 26 1971.

The elevated readings at Onsite Station #2 have been mentioned in Semi-Annual reports since then, but were not explained in detail since it was felt that this reading represented a routine result, rather than an unusual measurement or deviation.

Future Environmental Monitoring Reports-will contain a brief explanation for the elevated reading at onsite station #2.
