ARKANSAS POWER & LIGHT COMPANY POST OFFICE box 551 LITTLE ROCK. ARKANSAS 72203 (501) 371 t.000 February 5,1981 1R-0281-02 Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Comm.

SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-313 License No. DPR-51 NUREG-0737 Item Number II.K.3.30 (File: 1510.6)

Gentlemen:

The subject item concerns showing the acceptability of present small break LOCA models with regard to 10 CFR 50 Appendix K.

This was the subject of a meeting held between the B&W owners and the NRC on December 16, 1980, at which time the owners committed to provide a scope and schedule for addressing this requirement.

It should be noted here that AP&L's position remains that the existing small break LOCA model, as approved by the NRC staff, fully meets the requirements of 10 CFR 50, Appendix K.

AP&L is currently in the process of evaluating a proposal from our reactor vendor to address this requirement.

This proposal was recently received by AP&L and, due to time restrictions, AP&L's course of action has not yet been detennined.

We propose, therefore, that a scope and schedule for meeting this requirement be provided by March 1,1981. This small delay should allow AP&L sufficient time to formulate a course of action which will address NRC requirements for this item.

Very truly yours, Y
